Of all the funny internet jokes on marriage, this one by Groucho Marx, a veteran of three, takes the cake: “Marriage is a wonderful institution... but who wants to live in an institution?” Hmm. This must have been Wang Guiying’s broad view on life till more pressing needs made her change at the ripe old age of 107. The lady from China’s Guizhou province is now looking out — for the first time — and hopes to find a centenarian willing to walk down the aisle with her. Ms Wang refused to marry after watching women in her family being abused by their husbands, and supported herself as a farmer until the age of 74. But now she is worried that she is becoming a burden on her ageing nieces and nephews after breaking a leg.
While finding an eligible bachelor boy will probably not be an easy task, her age-defying act shows she is a spirited woman. Her desire has already pushed local officials, who have suggested that her family get in touch with old age homes to find candidates. Thankfully for them, the wannabe bride has narrowed the search herself: only centenarians need apply.
Getting someone hovering around the century mark ready to set up house with a 107-year-old might not be easy, but the old girl must be commended for her zest. No moony-eyed expectations here, rather someone to talk to, and take care of her. Period. Oh, if only we too were so clear about our expectations and priorities. Go for it ol’ lady, after all ‘marriage is our last, best chance to grow up’.
