Siddhartha Das, Indrani’s Mukerjea’s former live-in partner, was brought to Mumbai from Kolkata by a Mumbai police team to record his statement on Thursday evening. A source said based on their investigation so far, the police believe that Das is the biological father of both Sheena and Mikhail Bora, as he claims, but will nonetheless send samples of his hair and blood to the forensic laboratory at Kalina to see if his DNA matches with Sheena’s.

Though Das is not connected to the case directly, a source said the police want to clarify certain things he has said about his past with Indrani, including the birth of Sheena and Mikhail. “Though Das may not have been aware of the crime when it took place, he could throw some light on Indrani as he was around when Sheena was born,” the source added.

Das had claimed in Kolkata that he had been in a live-in relationship with Indrani for three years when she left him in 1989. The Mumbai police visited Das’s home in Kolkata on Wednesday and questioned him for two hours before deciding to bring him to Mumbai.

Meanwhile, back in Kolkata, Das’s neighbours told Hindustan Times that they had no idea when Das left for Mumbai with the police.

“We saw the police team leave his home after midnight on Wednesday. Around that time, the journalists waiting outside his house also left. Das, his wife and his son were still inside the house at that time," said Subodh Mukherjee, a neighbour.

“We did not see any family member leaving the house. They must have been taken away by the Mumbai police early on Thursday morning," said another local resident.

“The Mumbai police did not tell us they would be taking Das with them,” said an official from the Barrackpore police.
