A web of lies and intriguing relationships emerged in the Sheena Bora murder case on Wednesday with a former husband of accused Indrani Mukerjea being arrested amid a revelation that the deceased was Mukerjea's daughter and not her sister.
Here are five sensational twists and turns in the case:
1) Know motive of murder, says son
The motive of Bora's murder remains a mystery though Indrani's son Mikhail claimed he knew the real reason but would disclose it only if Indrani did not confess. He said if his mother did not tell the truth to the police by August 31, he would divulge whatever he knew about her personal life.
The police also claimed that former Star India CEO Peter Mukherjea's wife Indrani was present at the site of the murder, according to news agency Press Trust of India.
2) Ex-husband's involvement
Taking their investigation beyond Maharashtra, the Mumbai Police arrested former husband of Indrani, Sanjeev Khanna, in connection with the case in Kolkata. Bora, the daughter of Indrani Mukerjea from an earlier relationship, was found dead in Maharashtra's Raigad district in 2012.
Khanna, a resident of Hastings Road area in Kolkata, was arrested from his friend's flat in Alipore for his alleged involvement in the murder, Kolkata Police Joint CP (Crime) Pallab Kanti Ghosh said.
3) 'Sheena strangulated, set afire'
Mumbai Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria told reporters that the murder was by strangulation followed by burning of the body with petrol. The murder took place on 24 April 2012 and the body was found by Raigad police on May 23, he said. “On April 24, 2012, Sheena was abducted near National College in Bandra in Indrani’s car, and was later strangulated in the car. Her body was then burnt using petrol and dumped in a thickly forested area near Pen village in Raigad district,” said Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria, while confirming that Sheena was Indrani’s daughter.
4) Current husband shocked, confused
A shocked Peter Mukherjea said he had believed that the deceased was Indrani's sister and not her daughter. Peter said he would cooperate with investigators in the probe. "I have never experienced anything like this before. The news I am getting, the kind of crime that has been committed, I would have never expected.
"Whatever help, information, police need, I am happy to help them with that. I would be absolutely clear and straight with them and cooperate," he said.
"I don't understand at all with regard to my wife... Sheena Bora is her sister, I believed all these years, and now I am being told that she was her daughter. Whom I thought was her brother, is now her son from an earlier marriage, which I was not aware of. I was aware of one marriage and not so many others. So, now there are number of things that are appearing to me which are completely new to me," he said.
5) Sheena had an affair with my son: Peter Mukerjea
Former media honcho Peter Mukerjea also said the victim had an affair with his son from his previous marriage, Rahul.
Mukerjea, also the former CEO of INX Media, said he chose to overlook the relationship as both Sheena and Rahul, his son from an earlier marriage, were adults and could take their own decisions.
"Sheena was in a relationship with my son, which Indrani disapproved of," he said.
6) Police investigating affair, financial angles
Officials told Hindustan Times that the probable cause of the murder was Sheena’s affair with her stepbrother, Peter Mukerjea’s younger son Rahul, which Indrani was opposed to as she was afraid of losing her share in her husband’s property if the young couple got married.
“We are also investigating if the murder has anything to do with the money the couple got after exiting INX media and INX news in 2009,” said a police officer privy to the investigation.
The Mukerjeas founded the two companies in 2007 which were merged and renamed 9X Media after the couple exited two years later.
Indrani allegedly deposited some money in Sheena’s name who later refused to return the sum as the accused had not accepted her as her daughter, police sources said.
