The story of Sheena Bora’s murder, allegedly by her mother and former media tycoon Indrani Mukerjea, has gripped the nation for the past four days.
Sources in the Mumbai Police say Indrani is proving to be a tough nut to crack.
While gossip and several accounts of the ‘police version’ are going around on social media and in water-cooler chats, here is a sequence of events based on the facts we know so far:
The arrest: Indrani, founder of 9X Media and wife of former Star India CEO Peter Mukerjea, is arrested by the Mumbai police on charges of murdering her ‘sister’ Sheena Bora. A driver previously employed with Indrani spilled the beans.
The twist: Police say Sheena was Indrani’s daughter, and not sister. Indrani’s Guwahati-based son, Mikhail Bora, confirms he and Sheena are the former TV honcho’s children, but she always introduced them as her younger brother and sister. Mikhail says he knows why his sister was killed.
The shock: Indrani’s husband, Peter, says he did not know Sheena was his wife’s daughter. He says Sheena was dating his son Rahul (from his first marriage) and Indrani was against the relationship. Peter says Indrani told him Sheena was sent off to the US.
Another arrest: A five-member team of the Mumbai police arrest businessman Sanjeev Khanna, Indrani’s former husband, from Kolkata on Wednesday evening. Khanna’s is the third arrest so far in the case, after Indrani and her driver Shyam Manav Manohar Rai.
Official word: Mumbai police commissioner Rakesh Maria says on April 24, 2012, Sheena was abducted near National College in Bandra in Indrani’s car, and was later strangulated in the car. Her body was then burnt using petrol and dumped in a thickly forested area near Pen village in Raigad district.
Key witness: Police speak to Rahul, who arrives in Mumbai, as they consider him to be a witness. Rahul gives all details about his relationship with Sheena and his turbulent relationship with his stepmother Indrani. Rahul also tells police Sheena had told him about Indrani being her biological mother.
More claims: Mikhail (in pic) says he suspected his mother (Indrani) might have planned to kill him as well. Mikhail says he has photographic evidence and taped conversations of Indrani, Peter, Sheena and Rahul that could help the Mumbai police. He is questioned
Khanna in Mumbai: Khanna is remanded in Mumbai Police custody till August 31 by a Mumbai court.
Public Prosecutor Laxman Rathod says police need to recover the weapons used to kill Sheena, the vehicle in which she was allegedly taken in and murdered before her body was burnt and dumped in the forests near Pen in Raigad district, adjacent to Mumbai.
Seeking custodial interrogation, Rathod says police want to take the accused to the spot of the crime.
Sheena's brother flies in too: Mikhail Bora is taken to Mumbai on Friday morning for further questioning. Mikhail earlier alleged before the media that he believed that his mother killed his sister and he knew the exact reason of the murder but "will not reveal it now".
