Sheena Bora's birth certificate in her school records lists her as the daughter of Upendra Kumar and Durga Rani Bora, but they claim she is really their granddaughter, reports said on Thursday.
The birth certificate, beamed on television channels, shows Sheena's date of birth as February 11, 1989. But the certificate itself was registered in April 2004, leading to suspicions it may have been fudged.
"She is not my daughter. I am her grandfather," said 80-year-old Bora, disputing the school records.
He told PTI that the name of Sheena's father was Siddarth Das.
Asked if there was another person in Shillong who is believed to be the biological father of the murdered girl, Upen Bora said "that needs to be explored.
Sheena studied in two private English medium schools in Guwahati before moving to St Xavier's College in Mumbai in 2006.
The records in both these Guwahati school mentions the names of her grandparents in the columns for father, mother and local guardian.
The principal of one of the schools said this was not unusual, as there have been cases where a child has lost his or her parents and other relatives have filled in.
"Maybe, her grandparents did not want the shadow of Indrani, their only child, to fall on her," a person close to Sheena's ailing grandparents said.
Mumbai police suspect that Indrani Mukerjea, former CEO of INX Media and wife of TV tycoon Peter Mukerjea, murdered Sheena with help from accomplices and dumped her body in the forests of Raigad on April 24, 2012.
Police have found that 24-year old Sheena was actually the daughter of Indrani from her first husband Siddhartha Das, and not her sister as she had told others, including Peter.
Indrani, then known as Pari, was in relationship with Das while studying at Lady Keane College in Meghalaya's capital Shillong in the early 1980s. The couple had two children -- Sheena and her brother Mikhael.
Indrani later left Das, left her kids with her parents, and moved to Kolkata where she met Sanjeev Khanna, who had business interests in eastern India.
"She came home one day with a two-year-old daughter and a year-old son and left them with dada(Upendra Bora) and bou (Durga Bora) to be raised," the family friend said.
Sheena graduated from Mumbai's St Xavier's College in 2009 and was later a management trainee with Reliance there.
The last time Sheena went to her grandparents' was in February 2012, two months before she was murdered.
