Delhi Congress chief Jai Prakash Agarwal and CM Sheila Dikshit are likely to draw up separate lists of probable candidates for all 70 seats and discuss them with the party’s election screening committee on Thursday.
The two top Delhi leaders were entrusted with the responsibility of deciding two-three names for each seat after three meetings of the 27-member election committee remained inconclusive.
Party insiders, however, said the two leaders could not meet even once in past couple of days and will now take their own lists of possible candidates to the election screening committee consisting MPs V Narayanswamy and Bhubhaneswar Kalita and All India general secretary Shakeel Ahmed.
While Dikshit was in favour of sending single names of sitting MLAs on 32 of the 42 constituencies, there were several leaders who insisted that the committee draw up a panel of at least two candidates on all the seats.
It was only after the members failed to build a consensus that the joint team of Dikshit and Agarwal was told to look into the applications and shortlist names.
Sources, however, said the party will not announce the candidates before Diwali. There is also a likelihood that the central leadership will finalise the names but will reveal them only after the BJP makes its own list public.
“We have always declared our candidates just before the nominations have to be filed. So it will not be unusual if we declare our list in second week of November,” a senior party leader said.
