Sherlyn Chopra (formerly known as Mona Chopra) is a starlet, who has done several B-grade films and a few roles in Bollywood films like Dil Bole Hadippa and Raqeeb. But her biggest claim to fame is featuring on the cover of international men's magazine Playboy.
Sherlyn Chopra, born in Hyderabad in 1984, rose to fame in the early 2000s with her performances in several small budget, A-certified movies. Her skin show, ready-to-pounce sex appeal, raunchy lovemaking scenes made her the 'bold' actor with a hot body and a loud mouth. She has been nonchalant about her sexuality and its expression.
Sherlyn Chopra has played raunchy characters in Hindi as well as Telugu films after she won a local beauty pageant and was titled Miss Andhra.
Chopra's early acting career consisted of roles in minor Bollywood films like Red Swastik, Raqeeb and Game. She made her Telugu film debut in a film By Aravind.
Sherlyn made her first mainstream appearance in the Rani Mukerji-Shahid Kapoor starrer Dil Bole Hadippa! in 2009. She landed a side-role in an A-lister, Yash Raj Films production but in this movie too, more than the acting prowess of Sherlyn Chopra, we saw her playing a seductress with plunging necklines, tight skirts and bikinis.
The film bombed but soon after its release, Sherlyn was seen in the third season of celebrity reality show Bigg Boss. However, here too, Sherlyn failed to leave an impression and was on the black-listed nominations from the first week itself. She was eventually evicted at the end of Week 4, on Day 27.
After having a blink-and-miss performance in about ten films and three studio albums to her credit, Sherlyn Chopra finally arrived onto the tabloid scene of not just Indian, but world-wide media forums with something no Indian woman had ever done before.
In July 2012, Sherlyn proudly became the first Indian woman to feature on Playboy magazine. In the late hours of the day, we discovered that Playboy was about to bring Sherlyn a lot of limelight as well as Twitter followers. Sherlyn had posted stark naked pictures of herself from her Playboy photo shoot along with the crew of the magazine. The lady became an overnight sensation, literally.
And since then on Sherlyn has gone to pose for magazine covers, become the brand ambassador for PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) and much more.
While there was much debate about Sherlyn Chopra’s explicit photo shoot and her tweets, the starlet denied sleeping with Playboy owner Hugh Hefner.
“I did not sleep with Mr Hefner. No one at the (Playboy) mansion has till date made an indecent proposal to me. I love my naked skin. Felt quite comfortable displaying my nakedness … that is all,” says Chopra, who as a part of her assignment, was required to strut about in the buff all day at the mansion as she went about her chores.
Some time after making headlines with her nude Playboy photo shoot, Sherlyn once again created ripples when she confessed to having had sex for money and even declared that she was no longer available for ‘paid sex’. She wrote on her Twitter, "I now understand that I cannot claim to be 'free' and continue to make choices n decisions under obligation...I enjoy being bold...I enjoy oozing sexuality in still pictures n in moving visuals...I enjoy being a tease...I enjoy sex when it is the end result of an uncontrollable lust n/or attraction....Sorry to disappoint you but I'm no longer available for paid sex.”
Sherlyn, who has a massive following on Twitter, once even posted pictures of her pleasuring herself with a cucumber!
And then in October 2012, director Rupesh Paul declared that he was going to feature Sherlyn in the lead for his upcoming film Kamasutra 3D. Needless to say, the film had very explicit content and had to be shot in Hollywood for fear of agitation in India. The film’s first look was revealed at Goa Film Festival, in which Chopra was once again seen either topless or in the buff entirely.
After posting several pictures of herself from the promos of Kamasutra and even the trailer of her upcoming film, Sherlyn was abruptly shown the. Miffed director Rupesh Paul alleged that the Playboy model had uploaded a video clip of the photoshoot for the film on her YouTube channel without seeking his permission.
“I was shocked to see the video. While sharing the video, I had specified it’s not for public viewing, but she still went ahead and uploaded it without our permission. We were so upset with her unprofessional behaviour that we decided to start considering other heroines. So far, we have shortlisted Eva Longoria or Mila Kunis. Kama Sutra is a more popular concept in West than in India so it doesn’t matter if the actress is Indian or American,” says Paul.
However, Sherlyn seemed unfazed and maintains that she duly informed him and was not at all apologetic. “I do not regret having uploaded the video. The photoshoot video was not shot for private viewing. There is absolutely no need for me to apologise to Mr Paul as I am not wrong,” she defends. She doesn’t care about being shown the door, either. “Earlier, Mr Paul was in talks with a Hollywood actress for the lead role. If he wishes to have anybody else on board now, he's most welcome to do so,” she said.
Sherlyn Chopra is one the many starlets who have chosen explicit and raunchy antics to garner followers and stay in the limelight.

On being called a porn star
"There is a difference between a porn star and a Playboy girl. Everyone knows there is a difference between posing nude in front of a rolling camera and having sex in front of one. And well, I have only taken the first step till now."(sic) She starts sniggering after the comment.
On her Playboy photo shoot
"This is my life, my body and my work. This is not a local magazine, it is the world-famous Playboy."
About her cover
“It is the first time that the magazine has executed as many as 15 concepts for a model. When people see me, they will go wow,” she says, undeterred by the backlash. “People back there could not believe that an Indian could do this!”
The starlet is unabashed about who she is and what she does in life. You can be a fan or be disdainful but you can’t not have an opinion on Sherlyn Chopra.
