The Congress has had to do damage control on the issue of praise, direct or indirect, for Gujarat CM Narendra Modi for the second time in less than seven days.
After the Gujarat advertisement case, where the party described Modi as a good organiser, Delhi chief minister Shiela Dikshit on Tuesday was reported to have praised him in Agra and said, “There are no two opinions that development is taking place in Gujarat and (because of that) the government gets re-elected. Why do governments get re-elected? Because they ensure development.”
However, clarification came soon. Dikshit said being a staunch nationalist, patriot and secular, how could she praise Modi, who had been accused of having had a hand in communal riots.
Her office also issued a statement saying she did not praise any CM but said only the governments that delivered had been returned to power.
In her speech in Agra, she also gave the example of Assam, where the Congress government has been elected for three consecutive terms.
Dikshit herself is in her third term as Delhi CM.
Along with Congress spokesman and MP Rajeev Shukla here in Agra, she was addressing media persons while releasing the party’s poll manifesto.
Dikshit said in more than 20 years, various development works had been carried out in different states across the country but only UP saw no development. “Everyone knows the Congress-led government at the Centre has brought about revolutions for the common man.”
