"The issue of security to panches and sarpanches was discussed in the unified headquarters' meeting. Omar Abdullah is keen to provide security and the state will soon made elaborate arrangements for the same," Shinde told the reports outside the valley's revered shrine Hazratbal.
At least five grassroots representatives have been killed by unknown gunmen in the valley in 2012, instilling a deep sense of fear among them. Many have through newspapers resigned after the spate of killings in the last two months and threats from militant groups.
The state government has already planned to increase are domination in vulnerable areas besides reviewing security of the grassroots representatives on a daily basis.
On a three-day visit to the state, Shinde presided over a meeting of unified headquarters in the morning in Srinagar on his second day.
Senior officers from all the security and intelligence wings, including the army, CRPF and the state police, attended the meeting at Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre near banks of the Dal lake. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who is also chairman of the unified headquarters, was present at the meeting.
Sources said Shinde was apprised about the infiltration trends from across the border and the status of militancy
The Union home minister, sources said, praised the efforts of the security agencies for "maintain law and order, fighting militants inside the state and at the borders".
