The Shiv Sena, on Saturday, objected to selection of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) legislator Jitendra Awhad on the panel of presiding officers for the assembly as he was among the members of the controversial Adarsh cooperative housing society.

A panel of 4-5 legislators is appointed to assist the speaker in managing proceedings of the house by presiding over the house when the speaker is not available. Awhad is one of the legislators selected on the panel.

The Hindustan Times had first reported on November 1 that Awhad, a legislator from Mumbra near Thane, would give up his membership in Adarsh society.

“Keeping in mind the sanctity of the post of an assembly presiding officer, Awhad should resign or should be removed from that post,” said Sena legislator Subhash Desai.

Awhad, however, refused to accept the Sena’s demand, insisting that he had done nothing wrong by becoming a member. “Sooner or later, it will be clear that we had not done anything wrong in Adarsh. I will retire from public life if I am found guilty of doing anything wrong,” said Awhad. The NCP leader also asked Desai if he would resign as a legislator if the allegations were found to be wrong.
