The drama in the Sania Mirza-Shoaib Malik wedding shifted to Hyderabad with the former Pakistani cricket captain landing at his would-be-bride’s upscale Jubilee Hills residence early on Saturday.
The arrival assumed significance after the family of Ayesha Siddiqui, his alleged ‘first wife’, on Friday produced a nikahnama (marriage certificate).
A procession of relatives who visited the Mirza residence after his arrival refused to talk to journalists waiting outside.
Sania and Shoaib made a brief appearance on the balcony. In the 10 minutes they were spotted, Sania was seen handing over her phone to Shoaib, making him speak to somebody. Also, Sania and her mother Naseema were seen engaged in a heated discussion.
That serious efforts at damage-control were on became apparent with the arrival of former Andhra Cricket Association secretary V. Chamundeswarnath.
Chamundeswarnath is an old friend of Sania’s and is known for his troubleshooting skills.
Reports in the Pakistani media said the wedding venue could be shifted to Dubai. But sources in the Mirza family said it would take place on April 15 at Hyderabad’s Taj Deccan hotel, notwithstanding the threat of a legal notice from the Siddiquis.
Sania has stood by Shoaib, tweeting that the family has known the truth all along.
