AFTER THE sensational killing of Mehar Bhargava, a shopkeeper fell prey to the ire of eve-teasers in Cantonment late on Monday night. The victim had dared to offer resistance to a local goon trying to molest a girl publicly two days back.
Three of the accused were arrested on Tuesday morning following a named FIR against 12 persons.

The sequence of events began on July 22 when victim Shalik Yadav was sitting at his general merchant shop in the evening at Nilmatha Ibrahimpur locality.

Shalik was busy attending the customers when he saw a girl chased by a youth approaching his shop. However, the youth caught hold of the girl before she could reach the shop. When the girl tried to wriggle out, the youth pushed her down. Since the youth had criminal antecedents, none, except Shalik Yadav, of the onlookers mustered courage to oppose his indecent act.

Shalik helped the girl and brought her to the shop. He even yelled at the youth, identified as Devendra Kumar alias DK. Shalik told DK he would hand him over to the police if he ever indulged in such acts.  DK later left the scene threatening Shalik with dire consequences.

Shalik immediately informed the police in this connection. But the Cantonment police merely sent two constables to look into the matter. Neither the station house officer (SHO) nor the beat in-charge (sub-inspector) deemed it fit to visit the place and resolve the issue.

It was around 9 pm on Monday, about a dozen youths led by DK arrived at his shop and started beating up Shalik brutally. Hearing screams, locals rushed for Shalik’s rescue and both the groups resorted to brick-batting. While the groups were engaged in a pitched battle, a few of youths from DK’s group pounced upon Shalik. They hit him with bricks on his head leaving him unconscious.

While the assailants fled the scene, the victim was rushed to the KGMU Trauma centre. He, however, succumbed to the head injuries in the early hours of Tuesday.

The cops later arrested DK’s father Khushiram, Anil Kumar and Pradip Kumar.
