Should Bachchans have come to Ujjain?

india Updated: Nov 30, 2006 18:15 IST

IF THE reports that the ‘pujan-havan’ performed by the Bachchan family and Aishwarya Rai at Varanasi were aimed at avoiding the evils effects of planet Mars’ position are to be believed, astrologers and priests in the ancient city of Ujjain feel that the such rituals should have been done only here, as the origin of Mars is believed to be in Ujjain.

The Mangalnath Temple, on the banks of River Kshipra, is considered as the origin of Mars. The temple also has astronomical significance, as the Tropic of Cancer passes through the temple.

Noted astrologer Pandit Anand Shankar Vyas opined that corrective rituals for Mars’ position are described in shastras and Mangalnath Temple is the best suitable point to achieve desired results. Bhatpuja (prayers using rice) is conducted at the Shivlinga of Mangalnath temple.

Pandit Vyas said Varanasi was no doubt a holy place as Shivlinga Vishwanath is situated there but rituals aimed to dilute the effect of harm position of Mars in one’s horoscope are best done in Ujjain.

He also clarified that the Mangla Arti in which the Bollywood stars participated does not relate to worshipping Mars but is performed as first Arti of the day.
