Should India feel proud of Sundar Pichai becoming CEO of Google?

Nearly 70% of those who voted in an online poll conducted by Hindustan Times online on Tuesday felt that India could rightfully take pride in Sundar Pichai's appointment as CEO of internet giant Google.

Nearly 70% of those who voted in an online poll conducted by Hindustan Times online on Tuesday felt that India could rightfully take pride in Sundar Pichai's appointment as CEO of internet giant Google.

Of the 5,573 who voted till 8PM, 3,848 respondents, which is 69.05%, felt that the country could take credit as the new Google boss was born and educated here.

Pichai was born and brought up in Chennai where he went to Vanavani Matriculation Higher Secondary School. Thereafter, he graduated from IIT-Kharagpur, where he did a BE in metallurgical engineering.

But 1,542 voters, about 27.67%, felt that India did not have a stake in his success since he best achievements came in the US. The remaining 183 were undecided.

Pichai did his Masters from Stanford University and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He joined Google in 2004 as its vice president of product management and in just over a decade rose to become its top boss.
