The words MBA, IIT alumnus and cartoonist may sound odd when used for the same person, but that’s the best way to describe Shreyas Navare. The editorial cartoonist for Hindustan Times leads a dual life — between drafting creative sketches for the paper, and a full-time job as a brand manager with Yes Bank. Now, an exhibition in the city called Dabs & Jabs! will show some of his best work.

“I was pursuing an MBA at IIT Bombay, when one of my professors, who used to write for HT encouraged me to approach the editor with my sketches. They liked my work, and that’s how it all began,” he says.

Brilliant visuals and witty one-liners are Navare’s forte. His take on political occurrences and other current events is always humorous and often acerbic.

Ask him if he’s ever been asked to tread lightly on sensitive issues, and he says, “In the past, I have had to leave a few places because I would not let people interfere with my work. My stint at HT, however, has been smooth.”

The 29-year-old artist is particularly well known for covering the elections in six Indian states for HT in 2011 through his cartoons. This year, he took went a step further and covered the US Presidential polls in a similar fashion.

“It was exciting to track the electoral proceedings of a different country,” he says. “I realised that for us here, the US may be the greatest economy. But at the bottom of it all, politics functions the same way there.” The exhibition, featuring Navare’s work at HT over the last five years, will be inaugurated by veteran cartoonist RK Laxman.

Dabs & Jabs! is on from November 20-26, 11 am to 7 pm, at the Nehru Centre Art Gallery
