Shreyas Talpade's comic avatar
The Iqbal star finally breaks his serious image with Apna Sapna Money Money. Diganta Guha chats up the actor.
After giving power-packed performances in off-beat films like Iqbal and Dor, Shreyas Talpade decided to make the audiences laugh by doing some comedy in the film Apna Sapna Money Money. The actor speaks about his new comic avatar.
On doing comedy for the first time:
I have done some comedy on stage (Marathi, Hindi and English) and even in Marathi films. In fact even in a serious film like Dor, I did comedy. It’s just that people have seen me in Iqbal, they have an image of me.
It was essential not only to break away from that mould, but as an actor refresh myself and try and attempt something unique. In Apna Sapna…I am not doing too much of comedy, but the comedy is happening around thanks to the situations.
On
Apna Sapna Money Money
:Apna Sapna...
was a learning experience for me. Firstly because it was the first time that I was doing comedy and secondly because I got to work with the likes of Jackie Shroff and
Anupam
Kher.
I don’t have too many scenes with Jackie Shroff, but with Anupam Kher, I had a lot of scenes and so with Anna (Suniel Shetty). I have the maximum scenes with Riteish. He is a very sweet guy.
I remember on the first day of shooting, there was a sequence at a railway platform. We did some auditions and later Riteish improvised on the scenes. All of us laughed, but he said, he wouldn’t do this in the take since it was not his scene. That’s the way you build your chemistry.
Also, though the story and concept might look like "tried and tested", but the execution of the subject is certainly different. There are little things that add up to make the film what it is. All I can say is that the film is a family entertainer and there’s no nonsensical comedy.
On his serious image:
Thankfully people are now calling me Shreyas. After
Iqbal
people found it difficult to pronounce my name. Now lot of things have changed. Out 100, 60 people call me Shreyas. In fact some call me Beheroopiya after Dor. Hopefully, now people will call me Arjun (the name of his character in
Apna Sapna Money Money
).
On doing a dance number for the first time:
Yes, that was difficult. Infact, more than me all the other people around were scared. I may not be formally trained, but thanks to the numbers in the film, your feet automatically start moving. The choreographer Remo and I had worked together on stage. He asked me to try certain steps and was very impressed. I think that worked and even Sangeethji said, “You are a rockstar.”
On his favourite actress in the film:
All three of them (Riya Sen, Koena Mitra and Celina Jaitley). But I guess Ritiesh was the best of all in his girl avatar. He did a brillaint job.
