What is your idea of God?
I grew up with parents who believed in idol worship and I started out doing what my parents had taught me. Then as I slowly came into my own, I moved to putting my faith in a universal energy that exists in all forms — Christ, Allah, Ganesha... and all our other gods. It’s this energy that gives us hope when we hit a low. It’s the light that guides us out of darkness.

Do you make a distinction between religion and spirituality?
Religion for me is the tool that helps us understand spirituality; they co-exist.

Do you feel something or someone keeps you protected?
I believe that any mass or form, be it a flower, the earth or even our body, emits an energy that we call ‘aura’. When we harness it well, it emits positive vibes. Only when we don’t know how to tap it is when it gives out
negativity.

How do you make your spiritual connection work at work and in life?
The film industry is a place with a lot of negativity around, so at work, I try to surround myself with positive energy. I meditate and make my spiritual connection through yoga as well. I believe that if we will it, we can make anything happen.

Do you have a special God moment?
Yes, it was during those 40 days of my Kathak chilla when I was dancing seven hours a day with just one meal in 24 hours, that’s when something strange happened. On the 38th day, my feet started bleeding, I woke up at 6 am and just couldn’t drag myself out of bed. Suddenly, this crow flew in, perched on my window and kept cawing. It wouldn’t stop till I got up. I took it as a sign and it helped me to pull through the last couple of days.

Who or what are your spiritual ideals/inspirations?
No one in particular. My mother is very spiritually inclined and she got me started on this path. I have no gurus or mantras. In a way, it was yoga that helped me disconnect from the present to focus on a higher plane.

Define happiness...
Happiness is not something far back in the past or something that will happen in the future. It’s here and now.

What’s your personal solution for communal harmony in India?
Communal disharmony is the result of segregation... Our spiritual leaders need to understand the need to
integrate all communities.

Do you have a mind talisman?
Happiness lies in the mind alone.
