My brother is getting married in December 2011. I want to gift the newlyweds a vacation to Sri Lanka for about seven to eight days. Please suggest some important things that visitors to Sri Lanka should keep in mind.
Sri Lanka is an awesome place. It’s scenic and there is a lot of pristine beauty to be discovered. I went to the following places there.
Colombo: I’m not much of a city person, so I only spent a day here. If you like shopping, you can go berserk here as the options are plenty. If your brother is fond of shopping then he will definitely like the stay here.
Galle: This is one of the most beautiful cities and has a very European feel to it. You could visit the Dutch fort and museum as well as the restored Dutch church. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Kandy: This one is a very historical and culturally-rich city. There are quite a few places you can visit here as well as some Buddhist temples.
Nuwara Eliya: It means ‘City of Light’. It is over-looked by the highest peak in Sri Lanka. One of the unique features about this place is the climate. The average temperature is around 10° Celsius. So the weather remains great.
Batticaloa: This place according to me is a must visit for its Singing fish. The best part is that on a full moon night, a musical sound emerges from the waters here.
Apart from these places, there are a lot of sightseeing attractions. One of the most famous places that you need to visit would be the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage.
We too travelled in December. Many of the hotels have a compulsory Christmas and New Year supplement. These are compulsory fees (apart from the rent) to be paid to the hotel if you are staying on these particular nights. They would organise some events with dinner. Do check on this before you confirm any booking.
