Six persons were killed and three seriously injured when a three-storey shopping complex caved in on Wednesday.
The incident occurred around noon. Police said construction work was in progress on the top floor of the building — located in the City Centre complex of the New Industrial Township — when it collapsed. Most of the victims were labourers.
Several people are feared to be trapped inside the building. Rescue operations were hampered for a while in the evening by the rain.
“We have recovered six dead bodies. Three injured have also been rescued. Rescue operations are on. As of now, we can’t say how many people are trapped inside,” said Praveen Kumar, Deputy Commissioner, Faridabad.
“The upper storey suddenly began crumbling on top of me,” said Satya Dev, a labourer from Nalanda in Bihar, who has been working inside. Dev got away unscathed, but others were not so lucky. “Another labourer Sunil who was working right next to me got buried under the debris,” he added.
Four of the dead have been identified so far. Police are trying to find out who the other two are.
There was speculation that the floor collapsed because of a heavy generator that had been placed on top of the building. An inquiry had been ordered, said a police officer.
