Six soldiers were killed and four wounded in a blast in northern Sri Lanka on Saturday, the military said, blaming separatist Tamil Tiger rebels.

The explosion occurred along the southern base of the northern Jaffna Peninsula where Tamil Tigers and security forces have been fighting for over two weeks, said an officer at the Media Center for National Security, who requested anonymity as he is not authorized to speak to the media.

He said the insurgents had mined the area after a failed attempt to recapture the peninsula.
