A group of lecturers at a primary teachers’ training college in Patan, north Gujarat, were beaten up by students after a girl studying in the college accused them of gangrape.

The girl alleged that about half a dozen teachers of the college had been raping her over the past few months and had also threatened to ruin her academic career.

Though the college principal had received a complaint a few days ago, no FIR had been lodged with the police.

The accusation is being investigated, police said. Patan Deputy SP Raghavendra Vats told Hindustan Times that charges of gangrape were registered on Monday afternoon against five to six teachers. “They are being interrogated,” he said.

Following the complaint, the college authorities were conducting an internal inquiry against the accused before deciding on a police complaint, he said.

As soon as the charges became public, angry parents and students went on a rampage, breaking college property and damaging the vehicles of the accused teachers. The parents have also called for a bandh in Patan on Tuesday.
