Sixteen people were killed and 21 injured when the truck in which they were travelling fell into a gorge near Bhikiasein area of Almora district on Tuesday, police said.

The injured were shifted to a nearby hospital.
Chief Minister ND Tiwari expressed shock at the accident and announced compensation of Rs one lakh for the next of kin of the dead and Rs 25,000 for the injured.
He asked the district authorities to provide immediate relief to the injured and called for action against the owner of the truck.
