Condemning former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore's statement of being inspired by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to smile even during adversities, Congress on Thursday said the man accused in the Ruchika molestation case should undergo a mental checkup.
"A person who can do such a vulgar thing to a 14-year-old girl is mentally ill. His yesterday's statement is a result of this. The DGP should get a mental check-up done. How could he think of comparing himself with a legend like Nehru? Congress party strongly condemns it," Party spokesperson Manish Tewari told reporters in New Delhi.
Taking the media head-on, the former top-cop of Haryana had on Wednesday said he will smile more if they succeed in doing more "harm" to him. He added that he had learnt from Jawaharlal Nehru to smile when one is facing adversity.
Chiding the media for "talking too much about his smile" after the 'smirk' on his face on getting a lighter sentence in the case drew ire from various quarters, 67-year-old Rathore also said he will not "destroy" the judicial system like the way the "media was doing".
