In a first-of-its-kind initiative, the city police has started a SMS service to facilitate the physically challenged, especially the deaf and dumb, to get in touch with the cops while in distress.
"We have the toll free number -- 100 where common people can call up and inform the police but these (the handicapped) people cannot make use of it due to disabilities for which we have started this SMS service," Joint Commissioner of Police (Administration) Hemant Karkare said.
One officer in the main control room will be kept exclusively for catering to the SMSes, he said.
A handicapped person can SMS any information to the number 9320200100 to enable the police to take necessary action, Karkare said, adding that the service will be operational from August 15.
The service is not toll-free as of now but police department is thinking of tying up with some mobile service operators.
The police plans to rope in special schools and NGOs to spread awareness about the facility, Karkare added.
