IN A desperate attempt to keep UP Muslims in good humour, the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday demanded snapping of diplomatic relations with Israel. The party said the issue would be raised during the Monsoon Session of Parliament commencing from July 24.

Addressing newspersons here, SP general secretary Beni Prasad Verma said Israel was an aggressor and only the Hezbollah had been able to face Israeli attacks. Verma also assailed the Congress-led UPA Government for not condemning the Israeli attack on Lebanon. He said a large number of Muslims had been killed in attacks. Verma said the Israeli embassy in Delhi should be closed down immediately. He also said the UPA Government first buckled under US pressure on the Iran nuclear issue and now it had adopted silence on the Lebanon crisis. Referring to the recent meeting of Israeli envoy David Danieli with Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav, the SP leader said so far as he was posted in India he could meet anybody. “It is for this reason we are demanding his removal from the country.”

Further seeking to appease the Muslims, Verma pleaded for reservation for the community in the Lok Sabha, the Vidhan Sabha and government services. He said Muslims could not get proper representation in the government jobs. He assured the community that the party would give it assembly tickets as per its population in the State.
