The Gujarat police turned down suspended IAS officer Pradeep Sharma’s plea on Monday and refused to file an FIR against chief minister Narendra Modi and former home minister Amit Shah in the snooping scandal.

Sharma had sought an FIR alleging that his cellphone was illegally tapped and he was put under surveillance in August-September 2009, at the behest of Modi and Shah. He has now decided to move court, seeking direction for an FIR.

"This is a cognizable offence and the Supreme Court has said an FIR should be lodged in a cognizable offence. I have submitted audio clippings of the two websites (Gulail and Cobrapost)," Sharma said.

Gandhinagar SP Sharad Singhal refused to explain the matter. Another police officer, on condition of anonymity, said the state government has already set up a judicial commission to inquire into the incident in which a Bangalore-based woman was allegedly snooped upon by the state authorities at Shah’s orders.
