Initially considered a weak candidate when she was fielded from Goregaon, Vidya Thakur not only won the seat but is now also a minister of state.

Her family credits her social work, the ‘Modi wave’ and a little luck with her success. But Vidya’s husband Jai Prakash admits that her north Indian blood was key to her appointment as minister.

The Thakurs live as a joint family in Malad, where four brothers and their families reside in a Chincholi Bunder building. Vidya, Jai Prakash, their son and daughter-in-law occupy one of the flats.

There has been a steady stream of visitors to the Thakur residence since her unexpected elevation, with the family saying there has been a carnival-like atmosphere. “She has maintained cordial relations with all the people of her constituency. She loves to work for them,” says Jai Prakash, whose electoral management is credited for the former deputy mayor’s success.

Manisha says Vidya is an expert at balancing her life. “She takes care of every little thing in our home. Despite a hectic work schedule, she appears relaxed when she comes home,” says Dr.Manisha, who along with Vidya’s son Deepak, actively participated in the campaign.
