Soldier, civilian killed in J&K gun battle

A soldier and a civilian were killed in a gun battle between terrorists and security forces in J&K's Poonch area, .

Security forces eliminated one Lashkar terrorist while an army jawan lost his life during an encounter that occurred in remote Banola belt of Mendhar in border district of Poonch, on late Friday evening.

Giving details, SSP Poonch, SD Singh said, "A joint team of police and 37 RR had cordoned off the Banola area and launched a search operation in that belt. During the operation, a suspicious movement was spotted in a house, following which a party approached the house."

"When the search party reached the house, an armed terrorist who was present inside the house opened indiscriminate firing that led to an army jawan of 37 RR dying of bullet injury.

"The fire was retaliated and after a two hour long firing, security forces gunned down the hiding terrorist and recovered an AK rifle, two AK magazines and some other ammunition from the slain terrorist, " said SSP SD Singh adding, the identity of the jawan had not yet been ascertained.
