After a 12-day delay in registration of a rape complaint involving a 14-year-old German girl, the Goa police finally booked state Education Minister Atanasio Monseratte’s son Rohit for rape, outraging modesty, obscenity.
The Cabinet minister has also been made an abettor in the crime.
Already in the spotlight for shoddy investigation, especially when it comes to sensitive cases involving foreigners, the police appear to have left no stone unturned in allowing the Goa education minister’s son to slip away.
The complaint was filed by German researcher Fadela Fuchs on October 2 was finally registered on Tuesday at 12:10 pm. By the time six police jeeps and one truck filled with a reserve battalion reached the Monseratte home on the outskirts of Panaji at 4:30 pm, Rohit had already slipped away.
Superintendent of Police Bosco George, addressing the media late on Tuesday evening, said the police had served notice at the Monseratte home asking him to report to the Calangute Police Station in connection with the case.
Fuchs had claimed in her complaint that her 14-year-old daughter was the target of sexual and mental abuse by Monseratte’s son Rohit.
Meanwhile, Fuch’s advocate Aires Roderigues was brutally assaulted by a group of masked assailant at a hotel in Panaji at 10:30 pm last night. Aires, who lost two fingers in the armed assault, claimed that Monseratte was behind the attack.
“Monseratte’s friends have been calling me not to pursue the Fuchs’ case. Monseratte has planned the attack," Aires told a press conference on Tuesday morning.
The police have arrested three persons in connection with the assault. All the three accused hail from Monseratte’s constituency, Taleigao.
