Sonia and Rahul not to campaign in UP bypolls

Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi will not campaign for the party’s candidates contesting the by-election to 11 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh.

Both the leaders did not figure on the list of star campaigners that the party released for the by-poll on Friday. Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee (UPCC) communications department chairman Satyadev Tripathi said Sonia and Rahul have not usually campaigned in the by-poll. Only exception was Rahul's campaign for Raj Babbar in the by-election to Firozabad Lok Sabha seat in 2009, he said.

As the Congress is facing scarcity of funds the party is unlikely to extend any financial support to its candidates in the bypolls. A question mark prevails on whether those declared star campaigners would be invited in the various constituencies to hold the public meetings.

Those who have been declared star campaigners include All India Congress Committee general secretary Madhusudan Mistry, Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Nirmal Khatri, senior party leaders Mohsina Kidwai, Beni Prasad Verma, Digvijay Singh, Raj Babbar and Nagma etc.
