Congress President Sonia Gandhi has sent a congratulatory message to Maoist leader Prachanda, who is tipped to become Nepal's Prime Minister after the Maoists emerged as the single-largest party in the recent elections.
The letter congratulating Prachanda on the electoral success of the CPN-Maoist reached him two days back, sources said.
The Congress had sent a high-level delegation to Nepal in February this year to interact with the political leadership of the neighbouring country.
The visit had come as Nepal prepared for elections after adoption of a new Constitution that envisaged the country as a republic rather than a monarchy.
The delegation had interacted with Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala and leaders from various parties, including the Nepali Congress and Communist Party of Nepal.
The visit by the Congress delegation, including AICC Media Department Chairman M Veerappa Moily, Union Minister Shakeel Ahmed and Lok Sabha MP Jitin Prasada, had been seen as an effort to dispel criticism that the party has detached itself from the current political process in the Himalayan country.
CPN-Maoist has secured 120 seats, 50 per cent of the total 240 seats, under the direct voting system, and emerged as the single largest party.
Party chief Prachanda had recently said he would lead the new coalition government to be formed shortly as the country is being declared a republic.
