In an attempt to counter Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bihar package and his attack on chief minister Nitish Kumar, the grand alliance of Janata Dal (United), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) and the Congress will hold a “mega” rally at Patna’s Gandhi Maidan on August 30.
Billed as a show of strength for the “secular” formation, the “Swabhiman rally” will be addressed by Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Kumar and RJD chief Lalu Prasad. This would be for the first time that Gandhi will share a stage with Kumar. She has held few joint election meetings with Prasad in the past.
The three alliance partners are leaving no stones unturned to make the rally a big success as it will be held on the day Modi addresses a public meeting in Bhagalpur district, a rare instance as the rival parties generally avoid such a clash.
The Congress has released some of its posters which have the pictures of all the top leaders of the “Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance)”. Some of the slogans coined by the party for the rally include “Nitishji Ka Netretva, Laluji Ka Saath and Congress Ka Haath” and “Jag Zahir Hai Bihari Swabhiman, Nahi Sahega Khoon Ka Apmaan”.
The leaders are expected to take on Modi for his ‘political DNA’ remarks against Kumar in a Muzaffarpur rally on July 27.
The move, however, boomeranged on the JD(U) as the BJP and its allies won 31 of the total 40 Lok Sabha seats from Bihar in last year’s Lok Sabha elections. The JD(U) could bag just two seats.
