Defying pro-Tamil groups daring the Congress president to campaign in Tamil Nadu after the Centre’s “failure” to stop the killing of Tamils in Sri Lanka, Sonia Gandhi went full throttle on the ethnic crisis. She asserted that the UPA regime had done its best to save the Tamils in the neighbouring country.
“Our (UPA) government has done everything possible to bring the hostilities to an end there” and ensure the safety of hundreds of Tamils caught in the cross-fire, Sonia declared. It was the Centre’s persistent efforts that resulted in the Rajapaksa government in Sri Lanka announcing the stoppage of combat operations, she said.
Sonia said this at a Congress-DMK joint rally here on Sunday evening, three days before Lok Sabha elections are held in the state on May 13. “We are determined in our effort to ensure that all the remaining Tamil people are moved out from the no-fire zone to safe areas,” she said.
Sonia stuck an emotive chord with the crowd, saying she had been “deeply pained and anguished” like the people of Tamil Nadu over the “serious and heart-breaking plight” of the Tamils in Sri Lanka. While Sonia was at her only election rally in Tamil Nadu this time, AIADMK chief J. Jayalalithaa was campaigning in another part of the city, taking swipes at the Congress-DMK’s “failure” to do anything for the Sri Lankan Tamils.
