Seeking an explanation over BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s reluctance on the appointment of Lokayukta, Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Monday tried to dispel the opposition’s charge that her party had allowed corruption to prosper.

“Aaye din, bhrashtachar ke jhoote aroop lagate rehtein hain, jaise khud doodh ke dhule hain (everyday he is levelling false charges of corruption, as if he is the only clean person around),” Sonia said at an election meeting in Muzaffarpur, adding “We had brought the right to information act, which has been the most potent tool for exposing corruption and ensuring action against wrong doers. But the Gujarat government tried it best to drag the appointment of Lokayukta and brazenly allowed ‘corrupt’ ministers to remain in office.”

Maintaining that the country was at a crossroads where it had to vote, she said that peace was the pre-condition for growth and progress. “The BJP fails to understand this. It is out to make a bid for power at all cost by pursuing its communal agenda,” she said.

Sonia said that BJP’s alliance partners for the last 17 years were now shedding crocodile tears in the name of secularism and claimed that the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) was changing colours very often for personal gains during the rally in favour of Congress nominee Akhilesh Prasad Singh and alliance partner RJD’s candidate from Vaishali, Raghuvansh Prasad Singh.

Asking people to remain wary of ‘falsehood spread by BJP’, Sonia said “He must explain, whether he had some magic wand,” and listed out a number of initiatives like MNREGA and RTE for growth of all sections.
