Congress chief Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday relived memories about the last visit of the late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to Jammu and Kashmir on the same day 25 years ago — three days before her assassination.
“Indiraji had tremendous love for the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Three days before her death, she visited Kashmir and met people here and witnessed leaves of the chinar tree fading here,” Gandhi said at a rally after inauguration of the rail link between Anantnag and Qazigund here.
She said, “We are meeting here today on the same day Indiraji had come here before her assassination."
Sonia lauded the people of the state for turning out in large numbers during last year’s assembly polls and Lok Sabha elections in May.
The UPA chairperson said the new rail link will contribute to the progress of the state. “Peace was imperative for progress and dialogue was the only way to resolve issues,” she added.
