National wrestling coach P R Sondhi on Saturday said that Sonika Kaliraman, daughter of renowned grappler Chandgi Ram, was not included into the Commonwealth Games squad because she failed to attend the trials repeatedly.
"Sonika Kaliraman was given an opportunity to prove herself time and again to secure selection for the Delhi Games but her repeated absenteeism from the national camp diminished her chances," Sondhi told PTI.
The 26-year-old had recently moved the Delhi High Court questioning the selection process for woman wrestlers, but her plea was rejected.
"We asked her to come by January 10, she did not come. She came only on January 28 and three days later she left for an international tournament. After that she did not come to the camp. So, what's the Federation's fault in that?
"Sonika was given another chance to make a comeback. She faced Babita Kumari of Uttar Pradesh in the first bout and local-girl Gursharanpreet Kaur in the second but could not beat anyone. She needed to defeat them but failed to do so and then we didn't select her," Sondhi said.
