Four days after he fell into a borewell pit, two-year-old Sonu was pulled out dead on Monday. The family has accused the administration of mishandling the rescue effort.

Sonu was playing when he slipped into the 150-foot deep pit on Thursday morning in Lehrakapura village, 50 km east of Agra, and was stuck at 70 feet.

A team of army men managed to reach Sonu after almost 98 hours, but it was too late. The boy’s mother broke into tears on seeing his lifeless body. The father, Pappu, has accused the officials of mishandling the rescue operation.

There was a grim silence when Dr Ashok Kumar Shukla, a doctor involved in the rescue, muttered: “The kid has died”.

Sonu's family will be given Rs 1 lakh from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund and a magisterial inquiry is on.

President Pratibha Devisingh Patil has directed various central ministries to come out with safety standards while digging borewells. She condoled the tragic death of Sonu.
