Police on Saturday arrested seven persons, including six brothers, in connection with the murder of a contractor, Nazir Ahmad Naikoo, who was shot dead on Friday night in north Kashmir’s Sopore area, 55 km away from Srinagar, while one of his relatives was injured in the incident.

A group of unidentified gunmen barged into their house in Sopore’s Seeloo area and opened indiscriminate firing, said police.

Police have rounded up seven persons in this connection in nocturnal raids in Sopore area, including six brothers of a family and residents of Takikhan Mundgi, Sopore.

Police are investigating the family feud angle too, which they believe might have triggered the attack. However, a senior police official said two militants might have participated in the Friday attack on the family.

The victim’s family is said to be Congress’ supporter. Khazir Mohammad Naikoo, the victim’s father and also Congress vice-block president, claimed he recognizes one of the three attackers, who killed his son.

“While the gunmen were fleeing, the mask of one of them fell down and I immediately recognised him,” he said.

Police are reopening an old case, where two families were fighting over a piece of land.
