J-K police on Thursday said it arrested three persons and unearthed a criminal conspiracy behind the killing of a Sopore resident in Lal Chowk on June 6.

According to the police, the victim, Afzal Khan (55), a resident of north Kashmir’s Sopore area, 55 km away from Srinagar, was a money lender.

“Two persons, Farooq Ahmad Dar and Parvaiz Ahmad Tantray, both residents of Sopore’s Reban area had a dispute over a money transaction for a long time now with the victim. On questioning, the conspiracy behind the murder was cracked,” said Kashmir inspector general of police S.M. Sahai.

Khan was shot at in Srinagar by an assailant on Monday last. “During the investigations it came to the fore that the killing was not a militancy-related case. It was a criminal conspiracy,” said Sahai.

On the day of incident, Sahai said, Farooq Ahmad Dar called up Mohammad Afzal Khan on phone and brought him to Srinagar for the encashment of the a cheque for Rs 32 lakh given to him by Parvaiz Ahmad Tantray through Farooq Ahmad Dar.

“Tantray, a resident of Sopore, along with Shabir Ahmad Parray, a resident of Rafiabad and Lateef Ahmad, who happens to be a released militant of the Hizbul Mujahideen came down to Srinagar in an Alto vehicle bearing registration number JK05A-5721 belonging to Parvaiz,” said Sahai.

He said Lateef was carrying a pistol with him and under a hatched criminal conspiracy Farooq identified the deceased by walking alongside of him and Parvaiz kept his car ready near Abi Guzer crossing. “As soon as deceased along with Farooq Ahmad Dar reached near Pratap Park area in Lal Chowk, Lateef Ahmad and Shabir Ahmad Parray were following them. Lateef Ahmad fired upon the deceased from a point blank range and ran away using the same Alto Car,” said the police officer.

Dar, Tantray and Parray have been arrested by the police so far. “The weapon of offence, a pistol, has also been recovered at their instance. Search of other persons involved in the conspiracy is on,” said Sahai.
