The civic body’s property tax department has come up with an innovative proposal to recover its Rs 704 crore locked up in property disputes.
The BMC has proposed to offer a ‘motivational allowance’ for assistant legal officers who are fighting the disputed cases related to property taxes to help the BMC recover at least some percentage of the amount.
An increase in the property tax revenue will mean an addition to the civic body’s treasury, which could lessen the burden for citizens.
The proposal will be placed before the Standing Committee on Thursday.
Legal officers are fighting 1,291 disputed cases related to property taxes, with each party allegedly owing above Rs 1 lakh.
The allowance has been fixed at 0.3 per cent of the property tax recovered, which amounts to Rs 7,500 for every Rs 1 lakh that the officers get to the BMC. If the recovery is between Rs 1 crore and Rs 21 crore, the allowance will be a fixed amount of Rs 1.04 lakh.
The BMC hopes the legal officers would convince property owners to settle the cases with a part payment, instead of having to lose the whole amount.
