Sorry, Venugopal was autocratic

india Updated: Jun 19, 2006 16:45 IST

Across the country everyone feels that a great man has been victimised, but the truth of Dr Venugopal's manner of running the institute can only be revealed by it's residents. Dr Venugopal was given this institute on a platter by the BJP government with a "blank cheque" of running it in his own ways.

He is known for his arrogance even with senior faculty members. He never meets students, residents or faculty members for any problem solving. He has been known to push through his agendas through the dean's committee easily as the registrar; dean & sub dean were his men.

Pushing through the AIIMS governing body was so easy for him as the then presidents of AIIMS were so awed of him, they just okayed everything. He became a "hero" of the anti-reservations group only because of his clandestine support to them during the recent stir. The government realised what's happening only when it's intelligentsia reported that the stir would have fizzled out but not for Dr Venugopal's allowing them to use the institute lawn despite a ban by Delhi High Court against strike within 500 metres of the institute.

It is time the people of this country should know the truth: Is it correct for a person of his capacity to call for a press meets before meeting the Prime Minister? Shouldn't it been a meeting with the PM first to resolve the problems and then a press meet to explain his stance? Is it correct for him to instigate a crowd against a senior and respected faculty member who is the dean?

This reveals his true greed for the chair of the institute unlike a great man he was supposed to be. I hope the Prime Minister would allow the health minister in his capacity as President of AIIMS to cleanse the stable of Dr Venugopal's stooges and bring dynamism and progress to this famed medical centre.
