Scoring twice in each half, South Africa defeated Canada 4-1 in a pool B men's hockey match of the 19th Commonwealth Games here Tuesday.
The South Africans scored first in the 12th minute through Gareth Carr, but the Canadians equalized past the 28th when Sukhwinder Singh found the mark.
The Canadian relief was short-lived. South Africa regained the lead in the 35th with a penalty corner conversion by Jusin Reid-Ross who came good again in the 57th to give his team a 3-1 advantage.
Ian Haley rounded off the day's scoring in the 69th.
