A South African woman has been held by the customs for suspected smuggling of drugs into the country.

Pumla Caroline (33) was under interrogation by the Customs officials since Tuesday morning, following information that she had concealed cocaine in her stomach.

Twenty-six capsules containing powder, suspected to be cocaine, were recovered from Caroline. The Customs officials will send the powder for a chemical analysis.

“We would send the content for test once all the capsules are recovered,” said Additional Commissioner of Customs (AIU) BS Nunwal.

Another customs official said Caroline, who has been detained so far with special permission from the court, would be arrested once the report confirms that the powder is cocaine.

For over two days since Caroline was detained, the officials persisted with her to reveal the contents of the suspicious object in her stomach. The woman refused to cooperate and declined food, thwarting all efforts to determine the nature of the object in her stomach.

It was only by Thursday morning that the capsules were recovered. “The doctor’s report shows that some more capsules are still present in her body,” the official said.
