A 22-year-old South African woman was apprehended at the city airport on Friday morning for allegedly trying to smuggle 1.16 kg heroin to Kenya.
While the local value of the seized drug is just Rs 3.77 lakh, it is worth Rs 1.16 crore in the international market.
The Air Intelligence Unit (AIU) of the Customs Department arrested Isabel Aduardo Mazanga at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport while she was about a board a Kenya Airways flight KQ-203 at 3 am.
She was to reach Maputo via Nairobi.
Additional Commissioner of Customs (AIU) B S Nunwal said they intercepted Mazanga after receiving a tip-off.
On initial questioning, she reportedly told the Customs officials that she is in the garment business.
However, on scrutiny of her trolley bag, which was checked in, the officials found the drug concealed in a specially created bottom.
“Mazanga, a resident of Johannesburg, had arrived at New Delhi on June 2 where she was given the heroin by ‘a contact’,” said Nunwal.
She reportedly told the officials that she was in Delhi to purchase garments when a person approached her and offered $600 to smuggle the drugs.
She left New Delhi by train on June 10 and reached Mumbai the next day.
On checking her passport, the officials found that Mazanga had visited India eight times in the last two years — her last visit to the country was in March.
Customs officials believe that she is a professional carrier and might have smuggled drugs on earlier occasions too.
