THE SOUTH Zone team bagged the overall championship trophy in the five-day all-India LIC sports festival that concluded at the Tatya Tope Stadium on Friday.
South Zone bagged 27 medals including 18 gold and four silvers. North Zone came second in the meet with 14 medals including nine gold and two silvers.
On the concluding day, events of track and field were organised. In the men’s 800m race, P S Ramesh of South Zone stood first. Bhupendra Singh of Central Zone and M A Venu of Central Zone came second and third in the same event.
Abhishek Pandey won gold medal for North Central Zone in the men’s 400m hurdles. P F Miranda of West Zone and B Shihari of Central Zone came second and third in the event.
In the final of the volleyball, North Zone defeated West Zone 22-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-22. South Zone stood third in the event.
North Central Zone won the men’s team championship of carrom defeating West Zone. South Central Zone studded with international players won the women’s team championship defeating South Zone.
North Central Zone stood first in the table tennis team championship defeating East Zone. Team of South Zone won gold in the men’s badminton team championship. West Zone stood first in the women’s team championship defeating South Central Zone.
North Zone won the team championship of men’s chess category. South Zone came second. West Zone that included Woman Grandmaster Swati Ghate won the women’s team championship of chess.
Chief guest of the closing ceremony, LIC Managing Director Thomas Mathew, distributed prizes to the winners. Speaking on the occasion, he congratulated the winners.
Executive Director A K Dasgupta, Zonal Manager R V Rao, Executive Director Kamalji Sahay, T T Mathew, Dilip Tiku, S S Meena, Baburam and others were present.
