Southern Railway cancels, diverts trains to AP

As coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh remained on high alert in the wake of cyclone Laila, Southern Railway on Thursday cancelled some trains in Chennai-Vijayawada section and diverted several others.

As coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh remained on high alert in the wake of cyclone Laila, Southern Railway on Thursday cancelled some trains in Chennai-Vijayawada section and diverted several others.

Due to rain and cyclone warning, 2712 Chennai- Vijayawada Pinakini Express and 2842 Chennai-Howrah Coromandal Express have been cancelled today, a railway release said here.

2077 Chennai-Vijayawada Jan-Shatabdi Express and 2711 Vijayawada-Chennai Pinakini Express were partially cancelled, it said.

Several other trains, including 2656 Chennai-Ahmedabad Navjivan Express, 2641 Kanniyakumari- Hazrath Nizamuddin Thirukkural Weekly Express, 5227 Yesvantpur-Muzaffarpur Weekly Express, 2687 Chennai-Dehradun Weekly Express, 4259 Rameswaram-Varanasai Weekly Express, 2295 Bangalore-Patna Sangamitra Express, 2603 Chennai-Hyderabad Express have been diverted.

For the benefit of passengers, a special information centre has been set up at the Chennai Central Station with phone nos 044-2533 0717/25346031 to get information on train services affected due to the cyclone, the release added.

Cyclone Laila appeared to be weakening gradually as it was nearing landfall today but the Met office has said it might re-emerge in norhtern Bay over the weekend.
