DREADED DACOIT Shiv Kumar Patel alias Dadua has become a nuisance for both ruling Samajwadi Party and BSP leaders in Bundelkhand with the Dadua family planning to play bigger role in State politics.
While Dadua’s brother Bal Kumar Patel is an active member of SP, his son Bir Singh was elected as district panchayat chairman with the support of the SP.
Most dacoit gangs in Bundelkhand had thrown their weight behind Bir Singh to ensure his unopposed election.
However, rising political ambition of Dadua’s family has created consternation among leaders of both parties. The family members have been positioning themselves to grab Assembly and Lok Sabha seats in Banda-Chitrakoot area.
Dadua, who was once close to BSP, switched sides in 2004 Lok Sabha elections and ensured victory of SP candidate Shyma Charan Gupta from Banda. However, the family reportedly got disenchanted with the SP following police action against the gang recently in which one dacoit was killed.
The rift between Dadua family and Gupta came to the fore on June 13. While Gupta, as per the plan of party, had resorted to dharna against the Congress-led UPA government on price rise, Dadua family, distancing itself from SP programme, organised a Kurmi conference. Gupta accused Dadua family of hobnobbing with BSP chief Mayawati.
Local BSP leaders are also worried over the development, as they don’t want the family to rejoin the party. They said that Dadua’s renewed love for BSP was just to ensure tickets to family members. Over the years Dadua factor has played a crucial role in the Assembly and Parliamentary elections. “Cycle chelgi ya hathi” (people would vote for cycle symbol of SP or BSP’s elephant) was based on the directives of Dadua. However, political equations in the region are now fast changing. The family members have reportedly been striving hard to join the BSP.
Gupta is in a flap over soaring aspiration of the family. The ambitious family is now looking beyond Panchayat posts as they want to enter bigger portal of power.
Gupta played vital role in the installation of a Hanuman idol at Kabraha temple constructed by Dadua last year. He also participated in Bir Singh’s victory function at Deokali village and pledged to help the family whenever needed.
However, shaken over Dadua’s family’s bigger political game plan, the SP MP is in a quandary.
Dadua, who has assessed which way the wind is blowing, has started placing himself accordingly.
