WHEN THE Samajwadi Party celebrates its three years in power on August 29, Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav will find his coalition in tatters.
The SP had succeeded in getting the support of several political parties including Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), the Congress, the Rashtriya Kranti Party of Kalyan Singh and other smaller groups at the time of formation of the government in August 2003.

But during the past three years, the political landscape has completely changed. Friends have now turned foe. Even the RLD, which is enjoying power, is unwilling to join the ‘Jashna (celebrations)’ at the SP headquarters on Tuesday. RLD chief Chaudhury Ajit Singh told Hindustan Times on Sunday that he would go to Budaun from Delhi on August 29. When asked to comment on his participation in the SP’s function in Lucknow, he said, “Yeh sab cheesen to pahele tai honewali hoti hain (these things are decided in advance).”

The RLD’s dilemma emerged from the fact that further hobnobbing at the organisational level would send wrong message to its cadre which turned hostile to SP.

Interestingly, the two-member Loktantrik Congress Party of Harishankar Tiwari is fuming at the State Government. While the Congress has become enemy number one, Kalyan Singh is back to saffron brigade. Thus with all available indications the SP, in the run-up to the next assembly election, has been left alone to celebrate the function.

The SP State unit has directed the district organisations to celebrate the completion of three years in power by popularising the achievements of Yadav government. SP general secretary SRS Yadav said that Lucknow division would participate in function at party headquarters here. He said the CM would attend the function.

However, for the RLD, which had played a crucial role in the government formation, the celebration has no meaning. RLD general secretary Munna Singh Chauhan told HT on Sunday that the party had supported the SP for good governance but the objective could not be achieved. “It is half celebration, why should we go there?” Chauhan asked.

He said, “The CM is distributing Kanya Vidya Dhan but girls are not safe in the State.”
