In an apparent reaction to the assault on SP MLA Abu Asim Azmi by MNS legislators, a group of alleged Samajwadi Party supporters manhandled passengers of two trains at Mathura Junction, prompting authorities to step up security.

The incidents took place last night. However, police termed the attack as "stray incident".

"It was just a stray incident as everything is normal here," SSP B D Polson said today.

He, however, said, "security has been beefed up at railway station, bus station, and Dwarkadheesh and Danghati temples in the city."

The activists shouting anti-MNS slogans gathered at platforms and allegedly assaulted residents of Maharashtra travelling by Delhi-bound Jhelum Express and Mumbai-bound Deluxe Express trains, before leaving the station.

A group of SP supporters also burnt the effigy of Raj Thackeray at Bhuteshwar in the city.
