Samajwadi Party workers defaced Bharatiya Janata Party prime minister nominee Narendra Modi's posters at Rajendra Prasad ghat in Varanasi on Monday even as they hit out at the 'Har Har Modi' slogan with one that goes 'Thar Thar Modi, Dar Dar Modi'.

A group of SP workers defaced the posters around 10am. The situation could have taken a serious turn had BJP workers been present at the ghat. With no opposition, the SP workers defaced the posters and walked away from the ghat.

The workers of Uttar Pradesh's ruling party are now planning to put up 'Thar Thar Modi Dar Dar Modi' posters all across Varanasi.

With Modi contesting from Varanasi and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal in the fray too, the seat will be among the most watched in the Lok Sabha polls.

Modi has asked supporters not to raise 'Har Har Modi' slogans. "Some enthusiastic supporters have been using the slogan 'Har Har Modi'. I respect their enthusiasm, but request them not to use this slogan in the future," he said on Twitter on Sunday.

His tweet came after a Hindu seer objected to the modification of the 'Har Har Mahadev' chant for election campaign.

The political mercury in Varanasi is set to rise even more, with Kejriwal arriving here on Tuesday for a rally and roadshow.
